Modèle d'avis de décès

An obituary is a strange thing to be asked for: a life, in a paragraph, written by someone who has not slept. There is no correct version, and nothing in it is compulsory — which is worth knowing before you start.

Say where it will appear — a newspaper, a printed card, a post online, a notice on a church door — give the names and the dates, and you receive the full obituary and a short notice, the one you send to a paper that charges by the line.

Publishing an obituary is not a formality. Registering the death is a separate matter, handled wherever you live, and no one will ask you for a notice.

Where will it appear? This decides the length and the register. A newspaper notice is charged by the line, which is why a short version comes with it.
Their first name
Their surname
Their name at birthOptional. « Margaret Hartley, née Rolland » — without it, some readers will not place the name.
How the text speaks of them« née », « he is survived by » — the wording follows from this.
Their age, or their dates« 81 » or « 1945 – 2026 » — either will do.
The date they died
Who is announcing it?It sets who the text is survived by, and who does the thanking.
The people to nameOptional, copied exactly, in your order. Written in lower case, it reads on from « is survived by ».
A word about their lifeOptional, and this is what makes an obituary rather than a notice — a life, not only a date. The newspaper version leaves it out, being charged by the line.
The funeral
Day and timeThe most-read line of the whole text. Have someone else check it: a wrong time is the one mistake that cannot be undone.
WhereWith its preposition: « at Montpellier crematorium », « in St Roch's Church ».
Lines to addOptional. Nothing is required in an obituary.

Your obituary will run to about 10 words. The short version fits in 1 line, counting 40 characters to a line — every paper has its own measure, and its own rate. O que vai receber é um rascunho: passe-o para as suas palavras.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is the short, factual paragraph a family places in a newspaper: the name, the date, the service, and little else. It is charged by the line. An obituary is longer and tells something of the life — what they did, who they leave behind. The tool writes the obituary, and gives you the short notice alongside it.

What has to go in an obituary?

Nothing is required. There is no legal obligation to publish anything, and no wording anyone can insist on. In practice four things do the work: who died, when, who is announcing it, and where the service will be. A three-line notice does its job as well as a long one.

How much does a newspaper notice cost?

It depends on the paper and on the number of lines — papers charge by the line, and the rate varies from title to title. Ask the paper, or the funeral director, who will usually write and file the notice for you. That is why the tool always gives you a short version alongside the full text.

Can I use this to announce a death on social media?

Yes — choose « online » and the text comes out plainer, without newspaper formulas, and ends with the line that lets you off replying to everyone. One rule before you post: close family and closest friends should have been told by phone or in person first. Finding out in a feed leaves a lasting wound.

Is this written by artificial intelligence?

No. Every sentence comes from a template written by hand, and what you type — the names, the dates, the place — is copied exactly, never rewritten. Nothing is invented. Do still have someone else check the day and time of the service: that is the one mistake an obituary cannot afford.
